Truck stops are the RV traveler's best-kept secret for a quick dump, a propane fill and a fuel lane you can actually fit in. But not every location has every amenity, and dump stations do close. Here's what each big chain says it offers, and how to avoid pulling in for nothing.
Pilot Flying J
Pilot's RV page advertises "fueling lanes and dump stations to propane and overnight parking" at participating locations, including "both cylinder and bulk propane refills" (Pilot RV Services). Not every Pilot or Flying J has a dump. Use the location finder or app and filter for RV dump before you exit.
Pilot also runs fuel-savings offers through its app; check the current terms on the RV services page, since offers change monthly.
Love's Travel Stops
Love's says it has "more RV amenities than any other travel stop network," listing dump stations, wide turning lanes, propane refills and full hookups at over 100 locations (Love's). Love's RV Stops with hookups are bookable sites, not just parking. Check the location page for what's actually there.
TA / Petro
TravelCenters of America (TA, Petro, TA Express) is primarily geared to professional drivers, with truck service centers, showers and parking. Its TruckSmart app lets drivers reserve parking and book showers (ExpeditersOnline overview of loyalty apps). RV-specific amenities such as dump stations vary by site, so check the location listing at ta-petro.com.
What does a truck stop dump cost?
The chains don't publish one national price, and the fee can vary by location and loyalty status. Third-party RV sites have reported a charge of around $10, with discounts for some loyalty or RV programs (Vehicle HQ, Drivin' & Vibin'). Ask at the counter before you pull up, since many dumps are unlocked or activated by the cashier.
How to avoid a wasted stop
- Check the chain app or locator the same day. Highway dump signs can be outdated. Drivin' & Vibin' notes "just because there's a sign doesn't mean the dump station is in operation."
- Call the store if it's your only option for the next hundred miles.
- Use our map to see non-truck-stop dumps nearby (city sewer plants, state parks, RV dealers): find a dump station.
- Bring your own gloves, hose and rinse hose. Truck stop dumps often have non-potable water only. Never fill your fresh tank from a hose marked non-potable or unmarked.
Truck stop etiquette for RVers
Professional drivers work under federal hours-of-service limits and need truck parking to rest legally (FMCSA Hours of Service). Help keep truck stops RV-friendly:
- Use RV or auto lanes when available, not the diesel islands, unless your rig needs them and the stop allows it.
- Don't park in truck stalls unless staff tell you to.
- Fuel, then move. Pull forward from the pump before you go inside.
- Dump quickly and rinse the area if you spill.
- Keep your generator off in tight lots at night.
Other amenities RVers use
- Showers: Big chains offer paid showers; professional drivers often earn shower credits with fuel purchases (ExpeditersOnline). Ask the cashier about paying for one.
- CAT scales: Many truck stops have certified scales, which are useful for checking your rig's weight against its ratings.
- Laundry, Wi-Fi, dog areas: These vary by location, so check the amenity list.
